Rafael Yabut 's first experience in broadcasting started when he worked for DZRH back in 1947 as Station Electrician. During holidays, he would be left in the radio station all by himself and would play records while the broadcasters were all on vacation for the holidays. It was here where He was first discovered and given his first break in broadcasting by Mr. Hal Bowie, an american national, who was then the owner of the said radio station. Mr. Bowie saw Mr. Yabut's potential and gave him his first two hour slot.
 
 
 
"Tayo'y Mag-aliw" as popularly known was the name of Mr. Yabut's first radio program. His show featured the latest news, commentaries, music, etc. It was a two hour slot werein he played the most popular music and guested the most popular performers during his time. During weekdays, Mang Paeng as he is popularly known would drive his car to quiapo to buy one copy each of freshly delivered newspapers in the newstands. He would then head back home to cut, paste, review, read the latest and freshest news.
 
 
 
Little do people know that these news were in tagalog.. When Mang Paeng is one talented broadcaster. He can translate english news, while reading it live on radio into tagalog. He reads them in english and broadcasts them in tagalog.
 
 
Tayo'y Mag-aliw then became the most popular radio program during that time. His program consists of commentaries about relevant topics of which includes, government and politics, family values, entertainment and even trivias. it was a 2 hour-slot Monday to Saturday radio program. And every saturday, his radio program would be star studded attended by celebrities, singers and performers from all over the country who would perform for a live audience. His featured guests were all known in showbusiness. from big stars to big singers of his time. it was known that tayo'y Mag-aliw was one of the most heard shows on radio during the sixties.

 

 

His working habits include being at work at least four hours before his time slot. These includes preparation of music, news, translation, commentaries which he gracefully manages to put in his radio programs. A veteran that he is, he has managed his schedule well and is absolute in his profesion. Mang Paeng became more popular when he started giving commentaries on his news and people listened to his views. As a commentator, his personality was courageous and honest. He never shunned and kept quiet on important issues, specially about people running the government. His fearless broadcasting and bravery , several times , placed his life in grave danger.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On the night of February 23, 1968, at San Marcelino Street in Manila, He was shot. Nearing the intersection along San Marcelino street, fronting the traffic light, said jeep boarded by two armed men fired shots at him at close range. Mang Paeng, unconciously suddenly turned the knobs of his radio and so was slightly bending on his car when the men fired their shots. Instead of hitting his head upfront at close range, 2 bullets, one hitting the back of his ear and going out of his left eye, the other hitting his left arm . Passerbys thought that he was dead. The bullets that hit him were too close. At about the same time, Mr. Casten was cruising along San Marcelino when he heard the gunshots. He then came down from his car and drove Mang Paeng to the nearest hospital. At PGH (Philippine General Hospital), doctors and nurses attended to him quickly and was able to save his life. His wife, Margaret during that time was six (6) months pregnant with their youngest son John Fitzgerald when the incident happened. It took one month for Mang Paeng to physically recover from this incident.

 

Inspite of the trials that he encountered, Mang Paeng never faltered. He continued to comment on relevant and controversial issues in his show Tayo'y Mag-aliw.
